W.O.W. Coalition

September 19, 2014 by Michael Lopez

In 2011, the Working on Wellness (WOW) Coalition was formed with people from across Starr County. Community members from Rio Grande City, Roma, and San Isidro came together with the goal of improving health.

First, they wanted the community to eat fresh! Various school and community gardens were established throughout the county with produce being given right back to the community. A mobile market was created, which offers fresh produce to various areas throughout the county. To learn more about the gardens and mobile market click the “Eat Fresh” tab on the home screen!

Second, the coalition wanted the people of Starr County to have places to be active! The WOW Coalition supported the creation or improvement of various areas of the County to encourage play. New walking trails and paths were introduced all across the county. To learn where you can be active near you click the “Get Moving” tab on the home screen!

Finally, the WOW coalition wanted to promote and encourage healthy living! Various events are happening within the county including fun runs, health screenings, CPR trainings, and MUCH MORE. To learn more about these events and any future events click the “Be Healthy” tab!

The WOW Coalition and community members, like YOU, are so important in promoting health in our homes! To find out ways you can support these efforts please contact Yolanda Morado at 956-487-2306 or e-scrivner-morado@tamu.edu. Together we can make Starr County a happier and healthier place!

Testimonials

According to Mr. Muñoz, working in the Transforming Texas gardens teaches more than how to grow and sustain a garden.   While not all children will participate in building the garden in its early stages, every student who spreads compost, plants seeds, waters the garden, or harvests ripe fruits and vegetables, will see the product of their individual and team work.   He believes that the gardens teach students that with hard work and dedication you can grow your own personal success and proudly achieve your goals.   He is confident that the gardens cultivate more than organic produce, but actually cultivate a sense of pride and encouragement in the students that will transfer to other areas of their lives.
