“Housed in a colonia, this organization is most excited about creative ways to implement play in their community. At the workshop they learned how valuable inexpensive items like hula hoops, can bring large groups of people together to get active. They are also very excited about introducing a parachute in their community. Attendees explained play is important because it gives kids another outlet and keeps them out of trouble. With no parks in close proximity, kids in their colonia resort to using an empty lot. As there is not much lighting in their area, the colonia can be dangerous for youth playing at night. They are excited about using what they learned at the workshop in their community, and bringing more kids together.”
“This training is important because they learned different types of activities they can use in their community. What they gathered is that play doesn’t always have to be about sports. Play encompasses a whole array of activities, that is not necessarily meant for a specific age group. Equipment like parachutes allow groups of all ages to come together and just play. Representatives shared a story about how play can deter kids from trouble. One child was carrying knives in his pocket and once he started playing, he took them out of his pocket and gave them to a church administrator.”
“This training is important to attendees because they learned how they could use their space more effectively. Attendees mentioned they currently have a covered area on their property that they use for church activities. In addition to church, they will also be utilizing that space for kids to be creative with paint. In the future they are also looking at placing concrete under the shaded structure so kids have even more access to play. They mentioned having this area for chalk, sports, etc. There is no park nearby, so they are excited about maximizing their space for play.”
“What this organization was able to take away from the training is how they can deter kids from technology and getting them out to play. Physical activity includes many kinds of games and sports and they are excited to try these techniques at their church. Attendees also mentioned as adults they don’t usually think about joining kids and youth while they are playing. They will now think twice and will probably join them too!”
“Representatives from a young church explained how play is important. Play is important I this community because they are still finding ways to connect in their community and this is a great way to do just that. They learned new activities they could create in their colonia. Attendees learned new ways to utilize their space.”
