W.O.W. Hidalgo is currently operating in four communities’ interspersed throughout the County to include: Weslaco, South McAllen, San Carlos, and Penitas. Coalition members contacted to participate were based off of listening sessions conducted in each respective community as well as through community member referrals. Representation from various churches, organizations, and institutions was especially important as one of the overarching goals of the grant is to leverage community resources in order to create a sustainable model that will last beyond the terms of the grant. Coalition meetings have focused on identifying opportunities in which to build on in an effort to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables and increase opportunities for physical activity. Funding for W.O.W. Hidalgo is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through 2017.
